Lucio Mondavi

Lucio Mondavi was a Master’s student in Mechanical Engineering with depths in Product Realization & Mechatronics. In the Dynamic Design Lab, he worked on redesigning and building a new rear module for X1 to make the rear wheels capable of steering ±33 degrees. This module uses a double wishbone, pushrod suspension with a tall knuckle. The increased steering capabilities improved the fidelity of the low friction emulation developed by DDL graduate Holly Russell. This emulator makes X1 feel as though it's driving on an icy road though the tires never lose traction. It is a safe and controlled way to observe driver response to low friction surfaces, helping researchers to better understand how humans respond to unexpected or challenging driving conditions.
